Discount Armageddon is a fabulous urban fantasy romp with a kick-ass ballroom-dancing heroine, a lot of snark and sass sprinkled liberally throughout – starting with the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter, and a horde of mice who know how to have a good time. The Price family were once part of a shadowy organization who went around exterminating the monsters populating our world. An epiphany later, they’re no longer hunters – instead they catalog the Cryptids and send the more dangerous ones (to humans, that is) on their way.
We meet Verity Price while she’s in New York, waitressing at a Cryptid strip-joint whilst in-between dance competitions. In her spare time, she gets to know the monsters in her city, and dispatches the bad guys. She likes dancing, Krav Maga, and free-running. Then she meets Dominic De Luca, who’s in town to assess the Cryptid threat in NYC. Or, in other words, messing around in her turf.
Sparks fly as girl meets boy, boy disdains girl’s family, and girl beats boy up. Then sass comes into the picture as girl figures out how she’s going to work with boy to find out what’s really happening to the Cryptids in her city. Because it’s her city darn it – and nobody is going to mess with her monsters but her. Not even the creepy lizard-men she finds in the sewers below the city…
I love the variety of life forms populating Seanan McGuire’s new series. I love that Verity’s as snarky as they come. And I love McGuire’s story-telling. Discount Armageddon is the first InCryptid book I’ve read, but I can tell you now it won’t be the last. (But Seanan, please please please give me more Toby Daye, soon!)
drey’s rating: Excellent!

A solid popcorn read. Fast-paced, funny, and delightful.
Enjoyed this story. Fast paced with a snarky, overconfident, kick-ass lead character - just what I like.
Loved the world building with all the cryptids, Price family historym, and the Covenant... but the characters themselves just were way too lacking for me to really enjoy the book. Verity had her moments, but too often her decision making would totally contradict what you've learned about her. I highly doubt I'll give more in this series a shot.

Enjoyed this a lot, especially the worldbuilding. I think I will read more in the series. It was a bit sexier than what I am interested in but the romance fit the plot/characters/genre just fine. I like the Price family's take on how cryptids are part of the ecosystem.

It's been ages since I've read urban fantasy but going back to my roots has been so good for me. I love how Seanan McGuire has built her world alongside the technology of today and put her own spin on some classic creatures/tropes. The characters introduced in the Pryce family are exciting and full of a ton of fun mysteries. Solid set-up, but at times Verity could get a little bit annoying. I think I just didn't get why she was into Dominic bc hot doesn't do it for me, but he grew on me. Also tbh the constant repetition of "we Price girls/family members are badasses" ended up grating. you're showing us fine! You don't have to keep telling me.
Anyway, I've already ordered the sequel so let's rock & roll.

Okay, I was seriously laughing on every page of this book, even when our heroine is in mortal danger. Verity Price is a badass, and is also hilarious.
[UPDATED 5/21/12] This is what you really need to know about Verity Price: She is a badass, from a family of badasses, and she knows it. She is girly, but 90% less girly that other urban fantasy heroines (I'm looking at you, Calliope Reaper-Jones), and it works for her. She's, as mentioned in the mini-review, absolutely hilarious. I was honestly laughing out loud on every single page, and I simply -had- to read some of them out loud to Husband, who also found them very funny. My only real criticism would be that I wish the bestiary had been in the front (as the pronunciation guides in the Toby Daye books are), so I could have a primer on what beasties they were talking about before I started reading.
I'm looking forward to more Verity, and absolutely more of her family.

Very cool world, interesting characters, but the pacing and plot could've been tighter. ([b:Feed|7094569|Feed|Mira Grant|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1335958027s/7094569.jpg|7351419], by Seanan McGuire's alter-ego [a:Mira Grant|3153776|Mira Grant|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1282493757p2/3153776.jpg], has much tighter plot and pacing.) I love the worshipful mice. :)
I will definitely read the next one.
