17 Feb: I’m currently about halfway through this delightful tale. Rory (the urchin) is a plucky spitfire. Longinus (the assassin) makes me feel a bit demented since I enjoy his character so much (so far).

I’ve read some murky books lately that could use a good editor...this one was a relief by being clearly written, good characterization, and an unfolding world. So far so good.

>>> Upon finishing this tale, I stand by my previous comments. This is a gem of a book. Funny and heartfelt. Clever and imaginative.

I understand that a few of the characters are meant to be uneducated, but that much broken English drives me insane.

I would give this an 8,3 out of 10. It was a very nice read, and the first book is free with the Kobo app. I'll be buying the sequel in the future for sure, since this is the first free book in a series that I've had a good experience with.

The writing style is accessible, not too convoluted or flowery. The characters' voices are very distinct, setting them all apart (at least the main characters). There isn't a huge cast of characters, but it is enough to make the world feel real. The plot cleverly intertwines previously mentioned (seemingly minor) details and the ending is satisfying and not extremely predictable. I think the highest point was at around the 80% mark, and the excitement slightly toned down from there.

Still, a good, solid read. No romance so far, but I definitely didn't miss it. Maybe there'll be some in later books in the series.

I've set this one aside for now. Wasn't gripping me and didn't fit my reading mood.

Wonderful pacing and characterization, even for a good cast of supporting characters! Expectant for the next book in the series. The only mildly annoying thing is the consistent references to Rory's "rope-like hair", when the country seems to have a lot of dark-skinned people... you'd think they would have given it a name closer to dreadlocks.

Great Read

This was a great and fast read. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was everything I hoped it would be! Steampunky tech, adventure, and a dreamer with fire in her belly. Rory has a dream of becoming a hero but coming from the streets of Damsport doesn’t make it an easy dream to attain. I am looking forward to getting into this series and seeing the journey through! And to learn more about some of these characters.
