Four members of the Igbo people and one Brit in what is now known as Nigeria, living through the Biafran War - two sisters from a wealthy family, and their academic/writerly men (one Igbo and one white), plus the houseboy from a rural family. 

This was a heavy read. I had to take many, many breaks because of the difficult subject matter. But I am so glad I took the time to read this. I knew little about this time in history before reading this and learned so much. I care so deeply for all of the main characters. The author gives us an unflinching view of many aspects of war, but the trauma on the page never feels gratuitous. 

This is a modern classic and a must read.
