I think I agree with a lot of his points, but I didn’t love the way and tone in which he delivered them…I was truly sooooo bored for a lot of this book

I did not find this an easy or enjoyable read.
It's very dates, so I had to research numerous references. The first half is also a very grim look on theatre that made several arguments I as a modern theatre goer did not agree with, but that might be the dating issue.

I stand by a sentiment that has been expressed in other Goodreads reviews of this book- it's dense. Brook packs a lot of analysis of theatre of his time and theatre in general into a limited space, and often it can be difficult to follow if one is unfamiliar with the work of the directors and writers he references. Still, The Empty Space is a must read for anyone with more than a passing interest in the art of theatre for the reason that it seeks to answer the question that is a constant plague. That is, why do theatre at all? So read it, but take a few friends along to talk it over with.
