We can all say well if they had done this . . ., but then there would not have been a book. The parents should have tried earlier on to figure out what happened and maybe it would not have been so drawn out. I think to some extent they also should have told their daughter that she was adopted. Maybe not all the details but at least some.  Either way they ended up being rather lucky on getting away from the FBI and how it all concluded.
