This was a good book (not as good as Tom Sawyer but still good) and it was written with the voice of a boy. It was great.

We listened to this in audiobook format, which is was great for the kids. I think the dialect would be too hard to read, but was easy to understand with a good narrator.

Another classic that I just didn’t enjoy. I get the racism is a “sign of the times” it was written, but it’s still not pleasant. Glad I read it before reading James though!

I realize this is supposed to be one of the great American novels from history and that Mark Twain is highly regarded. No doubt he had profound impact on worldwide literature. But the story doesn't hold up for a modern audience. It's even less interesting on a reread now than it was as a kid. Not much really happens, to be honest. It's a long float down the river where it's a constant barrage of meeting characters only to get in a scrape and sneak away to repeat it again, only for the whole thing to have meant not much of anything by the end. Not to mention the jarring effects of reading the N word more than 200 times and deciphering the old Southern dialogue. The book just isn't fun to read, and despite some humorous moments and an underlying abolitionist tone, I didn't enjoy it all that much.

I can’t believe I let Tom Sawyer play me like that.

I hadn't read this book before. For being written over 100 years ago, it is pretty good. I got annoyed by some of the characters and their choices, so that's why it is a 4 for me. I do see why its a classic though.
