Not completely sure how I feel about this book, and definitely preferred the adventures of Tom Sawyer. There were huge chunks that I struggled to get through, and didn't really enjoy the first person perspective.

For all its entertainment value and humor, Huck Finn is a surprisingly cynical book. I wonder if lurking behind all the controversy (moral or racial) isn't the fact that it says some pretty damning things about humanity, and America in particular. Twain, DeTocqueville, and Socrates could have an interesting conversation about democracy; I expect they would all come to agreement pretty quickly. And then move on to the cigars. (Teaching Socrates about cigars would be the highlight of the evening.)

The book is a tale of the innocence of boyhood, coupled with an artistic depiction of one of humanity’s gravest crimes: slavery. Through witty storytelling, it's a powerful critique of the social norms of the 19th-century US. No wonder this remains one of the greatest books of all time. I wonder why it took me so long to read it. I should’ve done so years ago.
