Adrian McKinty

This is quite a departure for Adrian McKinty, and though it took me a minute to get used to, The Chain is a clever, gripping thriller that delivers a big dose of creepy! I don't want to give much away, but the story revolves around a network that orchestrates kidnappings by parents in exchange for their own children. It's a network single mother Rachel gets trapped in. In The Chain, McKinty has shown he doesn't have to be defined by writing about Ireland during The Troubles nor his memorable detective Sean Duffy. That being said, I am a big fan of that particular series, so I hope he stays at it. My only criticism is that the story moved very fast to about the halfway point, when something happened that really slowed it down and made it drag a bit. All in all though, a solid thriller with a fascinating premise, even if the execution was a little wobbly at times. I'm always excited to see what McKinty comes up with next.

Thanks to Mulholland Books for supplying me with this copy of The Chain in exchange for an host review.

The first half of the book was a great thriller. Wild ride. It actually made me uncomfortable at times, which is good for a thriller in my opinion. BUT the last half of the book seemed lazy? And quite ridiculous at times. It also started to get VERY predictable which is such a let down.

Great book. McKinty has great balance when it comes to creating tension without going overboard. Ive read this as well as the “Dead” series. All great.

This book is fucked up.

I just couldn’t get into this book. The premise of everyone kidnapping an additional child in an effort to keep your own child from being killed simply is not plausible.

First half way waaaay better than the second but overall I liked it :)

The idea of the chain was fantastic and thrilling! However, there were a few characters and some violence that I just didn't think were necessary. The story, itself, is super creepy, and would totally make an amazing movie. I think at the end, the author tried to keep adding ideas, and the story stood without the added extras.

3⭐

This book started SO good, from the 1st page I was drawn in and thought it could’ve been 4/5 star easily, the 1st half was good, I really enjoyed it! It was suspenseful, nerve wracking and I was on the edge of my seat. However, by the second half it got pointless and a real let down! I was holding out to maybe a good twist- however as soon as the character was introduced it was obviously obvious who the “villain” was. I was so disappointed by the end as everything was so obvious on what was going to happen. I really disliked the writing style it felt so messy. Overall a 3 star, I don’t think I’ll be rushing to read this author anytime soon
