If you have a child, if there is a child in your family who you love, hell, if you've ever met a child - this book will be hard to swallow.
The premise is simple: your child is taken and you face every parents nightmare. To bring your child home, you have to inflict that same hell on another family. We say we will do anything to protect our kids, this book will show you exactly how far that could go.
Within a few short minutes it had my full attention. Victim, accomplice, criminal, victim, round and round. Just when you think one thing is over, it strikes back in another form. Taking a child isn't just about the kidnapping part and criminals aren't always the bad guys.
I absolutely devoured this. From start to finish in maybe 6 hours, split up through a 24 hour stretch. Knowing that my babies were near me at all times while I was reading made it a bit easier to breathe as I flipped pages. Had I taken longer to read this, I'm not sure my psyche could have handled it.
It has already been suggested to a couple of people and is on a purchase list at my library. No doubt it will become a discussion piece.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchamge for my honest review.

[b:The Chain|42779092|The Chain|Adrian McKinty|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1543430536l/42779092._SY75_.jpg|66538301] started off gangbusters, and was quite the wild ride for the first third of the book. Then something happened and it fell off, and became predictable, bloated and clunky. As well, I quickly grew weary of all the whining, indignance and bewilderment.
Regardless, it's a decent book, if you gloss over the more annoying vocalizations of the players, and don't mind trading solid character development for neck-breaking action and constant twists. It reads like it was meant to become the next Netflix Original movie, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it show up in my "Top Picks for Donna" list soon.

So unbelievable--for adults and children involved. I was unable to suspend disbelief. Stayed with it, even as I knew it would resolve in such a romance way. Actually boring for much of the novel. And the random introduction of literature and mythology references felt forced--as though that would give weight to the story.
Regular mom with cancer goes full Rambo--stupid.

So captivating from beginning to end, was so hard to put down
3.5 stars rounded up. This would have been a 5 star book but the last third of it dropped the rating for me. It was action packed (if a little outrageous) and the story at least sort of made sense.
Then I feel like the writer didn’t quite no how to end it so there was just this mismash of insanity towards the end.
I read it in one day though so it’s a fast fun read. Just do go looking for anything that really makes sense

While reading this book you hope that fiction does not soon become reality.
A single mom receives a call that her daughter has been kidnapped, that she cannot go to the police, must pay a reasonable ransom in bitcoin and the real kicker...she must kidnap another child. Once all that is done and the parents of the child she kidnaps do the same, her child will be released. Hence the chain.

I feel like I might be a bit generous here with my stars. I was very excited about reading this book, the concept is unique and interesting, but the execution fell flat for me and in the end I was struggling to finish the book.
This book definitely kept me turning the pages. I loved Rachel as the heroine, fighting the cancer that returned, doing whatever it took to save her daughter, and finding the strength inside that she didn’t think she had. The climax was a bit predictable. Also, I had a real issue with the ending. I would have loved to hear more about her relationship with Pete (also, was Marty just A-OK with his ex-wife dating his brother??) and to have gotten more of a resolution for her journey with cancer. Instead, the last few pages end with her going to buy a pregnancy test? To me, it was pointless to end on that note.
