Probably one of the better suspense novels of the past 5 years. McKinty was born in Northern Ireland, but currently lives in the US. In the book. Rachel, a divorced professional mother who lives just outside Boston, has her daughter kidnapped. But to win her freedom Rachel must use the research to kidnap and ransom the next child. The Chain of the title is a mix of the dark web, and burner cell phones. McKinty has authored several crime novels, but this is one of his best. It says a lot about his storytelling, that this book is kept humming in suspense, and with neat twists. The book is also compelling in that the characters are well drawn and relatable, with Rachel the resolute and resourceful mother, and the best Uncle Pete character featured in a book, in many years (The book is blurbed by novelist Don Winslow, and Winslow is also thanked in the author's note at the end. The two writers have some things in common.)
The book started off brilliantly. The plot in the first part was very engaging and addictive. I have never read anything like that before. But the second part felt off, predictable, like all regular books. I wish the book had ended at part one.
Well that was intense . The second part started slow, but it all comes together in the end.

-Rachel gets a call that her daughter has been kidnapped and the only way to get her back is to kidnap someone else’s child and keep The Chain going
-Def enjoyed this; I liked the short chapters and the jump b/w time frames & plot lines that led to the reveal, but some small plot holes here & there

Wow. I have such a stiff neck: I have sat and read this from beginning to end in one day. Really great story -- matches the hype. Very satisfying read
