This book is beautifully written, incredibly creative and moving, but I found myself wondering if I missed something a lot of the time. Parts felt ethereal, but also a little too cerebral. Overall, I enjoyed the novel but I felt like I didn’t really “get” the overall message.

It took me a while to really get in the swing of this book and even longer to really see how much of a fairy tale it was. Probably didn’t really get into it until a third of the way and another third to hear the narrator as another character. It was really hard to get what was going on between jumping timelines. Not to mention that the magical realism, while imaginative and beautiful, was something I had trouble reconciling in a seemingly regular family story. Was honestly going to rate it lower until the last few chapters of the books but ultimately liked it. Might be worth a re-read with a bit of a different perspective and not feeling as lost in the thick of the story
I wanted so badly to like this book. Unfortunately, giving it two stars feels generous. It started off well but slowly became more and more boring. It was never bad and there were moments throughout that were wonderful, but it was not consistently wonderful. I would have probably given this a higher rating had it not been for the ending. Other reviewers mentioned DNF this book, and I wish I had done the same (something I rarely would say about any book). I pushed through this one in the hopes of a satisfying ending but there was none to be found. There is a complete tone shift for the last 3 chapters that honestly just threw me off and felt very out of place. Even the language at the start of that section implied that these were an after thought. I am not sure what effect was intended. I found this tone shift and the unsatisfying ending so frustrating that it completely ruined the aspects I did enjoy about this book. As a result I would not recommend this to anyone. I will likely check out some of the author's other work as I have heard really good things about her, but this first foray into her writing was at best disappointing.
I just don’t particularly care to finish it.

this might be the weirdest book I've ever read, but I enjoyed it.
