I like the exploration of different experiences with the hijab and Islam. I learned about the Bangladesh Genocide, which I did not know about prior to this book, how that trauma can affect one's relationship with one's culture, religion, and identity.

Emotional, nuanced, and richly colored. This is a quite powerful graphic novel, and the themes/feelings are emphasized very nicely though the artwork. One of my favorite elements was that although Nisrin was alone in many ways (no one in her own household wears a headscarf, and she's starting all over at a new school) the reader gets to watch her build and reevaluate her relationships with those around here and move into this new era where, although there are challenges and scary things, she knows she has support and love.

I would love to have seen more of the ideas in this novel fleshed out but it's a great book with important information and a strong coming of age message about staying true to yourself even when things are difficult. Definitely would recommend!

What a great coming of age story, that takes a look at racism, anti-muslim sentiment and finding one’s path. There are a lot layers in this and some storylines that would be great to see developed more. I look forward to reading more by Private Huq
