Walt's determination once on a case, and his hospital since-discharging really bothered me in this one. It wasn't his case; there were other people who could have and should have been doing this job. I didn't understand the motivations of a lot of the people making the wrong choices in this book, either. But if I ignored those irritations, the story was good.

Writing a book (or more) a year has got to be tough to do consistently. Sometimes you just don't have a great idea, but you have to start writing anyway. I suspect Craig Johnson thought of a neat train sequence for the end and filled in backwards from there. None of the usual Longmire stuff works here. You always have to allow for his terrible 2 dimensional women characters. The two main offenders exist here to make childish demands of Walt (Caty) and lust after him / cuss (Vic). Henry Standing Bear makes an appearance but has no effect on the plot. These characters have always existed in a heightened reality but they're bordering on cartoonish in this installment. Worst, the fridge-ing of three women is really unacceptable in modern storytelling.

I like this series and I'm looking forward to Dry Bones. Still, I'm starting to worry that the Johnson's worst instincts are taking over.

(Oh, and the less said about the "cliffhanger" from the last book, the better.)

Another excellent installment. I know why I read all the others back to back. They are quite good and I will have to wait a while for another one.

The dialogue sparks & creates moments that string together. The ending lurches like a loco of danger to wrap up a fine example/instalment in the Longmire line.

Such a great book!!! I wish Mr. Johnson could concentrate on writing the books and leave the TV show alone. I've tried to watch it, but Vic and Henry are just not right. Anyway...this book is great just like all the others. I hate it when the story ends!
