When I started reading the book and noticed it's the first novel concentrating on the Marik's Free Worlds League, I was curious because they had been mostly ignored in all the other BattleTech novels. I remembered reading about the Knights of the Inner Sphere later on in the timeline and thought this was going to be more about the forming of said group.

Instead we learn – or I guess we learn – some weird things about Word of Blake and the rest of the story concentrates on sir Masters figuring out what actually happens on Gibson. So, the novel takes quite a different route than what I expected.

The beginning of the Knights of the Inner Sphere (who play a pretty big part in the Twilight of the Clans series).
Quite a lot of politics going on, very little 'mech action.
It's a good enough read if you know the background/what will happen later. If you pick it up as a standalone read then you're going to be disappointed.
