Nothing really happened, but it was an interesting character study on Warner, and I liked reading Juliette’s diary entries.

Interesting POV from Warner. Definitely read before getting into book 2!

Decidedly meh.  I wasn't sure if a novella was supposed to have me on Warner's side, making him seem sympathetic and empathetic to Juliette.  There was like creepy obsessive stalker vibes from both of her love interests with insta-love on their part and it was just a bit too cringe for my tastes.  I'm semi interested in the world and plot of the overall story so I might read spoilers for the series but I do not plan to continue reading.

This is not to say that the writing is bad.  I think the way the author uses metaphor is very vibrant and evocative and honestly paints a picture with phrases and repetition.  I just cannot get over the juvenile relationship angst.  Oh well.  Not for me, but could be for thee.

This novella only serves one purpose: making Warner likeable and fully airing out his infatuation with J. And that goal has been reached. I am not sure if I really should have read it because now there is nothing left to wonder about. Secretly Warner seems to be a sensible, guy trying to save innocent civilians and dogs. All bad he has done was done in good faith or because his father has made him do it. Which makes him less of a complex character that I hoped he would be. It would have been interesting following a character that actually believes in the mission of the Reestablishment but he seems to be just as desillusioned in the institution as his love interest. Unfortunately, the few events of this novella foreshadow the miscommunication between the two will-be-lovebirds: His father wants to kill her due to the perceived weakness his son has for her, so Warner will try to seem as indifferent to her as possible while he searches for her trying NOT to officially find her. Unravel Me please surprise me a little bit.
