This could have been a 50-page booklet. Soooooo much repetition.

This is really the go-to book on Ignatian discernment of spirits, and for good reason! My only criticism is that it gets kind of long and repetitive at times. But it’s so relatable, and really does help explain you to yourself.

An important guide for those seeking to discern the workings of the Holy Spirit and also the attempts of the evil spirits in the world to affect them. Sometimes it takes a few passes at reading these Ignatian rules, but it's worth the effort.

In this book Fr Gallagher further expounds the fourteen rules of St. Ignatius of Loyola on the discernment of spirits. He uses real life examples to further drive home his points, which gives each rule a practical feel. Although a large part of the rule addresses spiritual desolation, spiritual consolation is also discussed. And indeed both go hand in hand like the crests and falls of an undulating wave. It helps the reader learn how to become aware of the movements within, understand what it means (spiritual or non-spiritual consolation/desolation) and to take appropriate action (accepting the spiritual consolation and rejecting the spiritual desolation).

In the final three rules (12-14), the tactics of the enemy is laid bare and the ways by which the enemy can be thwarted is provided. This book is a must read for every Christian who is striving and maturing in the love of Christ and on the pursuit of eternal glory. It is also a helpful guide in fulfilling the spiritual dictum: Know thyself!

I read this book for an online class. This is my third time reading the book and second time taking a class on it. The material is, I think, necessary for understanding the spiritual life and fighting the good fight but, initially can be difficult to understand. That is why, I presume, the author repeats himself throughout the book, breaks each rule down nearly word by word and has plenty of examples. The repetitiveness is why I have given it 4.5 starts on this third time through.
