Although this novel is obviously aimed at an audience younger than myself, I still found it to be very relatable (after all, I have been 12/13 years old too!)

A loveable cast of characters and a whole host of cozy moments and world building makes this such an easy and fun read.

“I’ve come to believe that everyone has some type of magic inside them. If a person can find their magic and lovingly cultivate it, they’ll truly feel alive every day.” (- Eiko Kadono, translated by Emily Balistrieri) is a sentiment that will stick with me long after the specifics of being a young teen will fade and all that remains are the overarching wisps of feelings felt fondly.

Such a sweet little read. I may not be the target audience, but it was still enjoyable. I feel like I need to buy a couple copies as gifts for the children in my life.

Each chapter feels a bit episodic. I can see why it inspired the film!

If you need something simple and cozy, I recommend it!

Wholesome, witchy coming of age. There is just a touch of Alice in Wonderland style absurdity too. That definitely works. Endearingly earnest protagonist. Distinct (and very charming) tone. Well paced plot - relaxed but doesn't linger too long in one place. If this were written today it would probably be labeled a cozy fantasy. I didn't get bored, though. There are high stakes situations Kiki has to figure out. This is perfect if you need a light, low-stress book to sweep you away and distract you for a while. Didn't change my life or shake my soul or anything, but it was a lovely little escape.

Cute! Some scenes are almost word for word as it is in the film..but there are many other new adventures that Kiki goes on!

I can't tell if the translation is clunky at times or if it's because it's a kid's book...but dialogue is definitely odd at times.
