This isn't great literature, but it sure is fun. Lots of adventure, fascinating creatures, scientific mysteries, and even a little romance.

God, I love classic SF short stories of the problem-solving variety, and I love them even more when they're an excuse to biology nerd and also understatedly feminist. I regret only that I somehow missed this earlier.

Janet Kagan has only written a few books; I wish she'd write more. She has consistently creative and intriguing plots with very believable characters.
