totally an it's me not the book issue. I'll start with the good and say I liked Elishva and I liked the one chapter about the Whatsitsname and things finally got interesting in the last couple chapters. However I think a lot before that was skirting around and focusing on details and I had no sense of time passing or things happening — at the end it was mentioned that the first murder had been months ago and I was kind of shocked because it felt almost like it could have just been a couple weeks. I also personally have a lot of trouble reading books where most of the characters are men. this is just a me thing. but there were too many men. and also back to a more reasonable criticism I feel like not nearly as much time was spent on the Whatsitsname or the murders or Hadi as I expected? I know at its core this book is actually about the war but it just wasn't what I expected it to be. sad :(

It’s a good book. I feel like it lost its way a bit following Mahmoud though and focused too prominently on him. I wish we could have followed Daniel aka Frankenstein more, but at the same time it added a bit more to the mysterious atmosphere. I honestly feel like it was a bit of a clunky translation, especially considering the original by Saadawi won the IPAF.

The concept of this books struck me as really interesting but I was disappointed by the execution. It puts an original twist of the story of Frankenstein and his creature. It also includes more perspectives which was really interesting but I actually thought we saw very little of the creature and Hadi after a little while. The focus shifted to a whole other character and I kinda lost intrigue. I think the author could’ve wrapped up the story in a much more unique way and less rushed as well. It was an interesting concept but it could’ve been shortened to reach its full potential in my opinion.

i really loved the concept of the whatsitsname and its musings on criminality and innocence, but i wish more time was spent on that.
