Extremely interesting and engaging in classic Coben style UNTIL the final plot twist, which rang so false as to render the whole thing a huge disappointment. Spoilers follow.

It turns out "the government did it". It was this great story about a detective with troubled teen years and a lot of bad experiences who grew up to have a solid life and good friendships despite the murder of his sister and a friend. Happenstance occurrences caused him to investigate his sister's disappearance, and he gets closer and closer, and it has something to do with some mysterious woods near his childhood home, and then in the last ten pages, he pins it all on some flat, poorly-fleshed out government agency who apparently just ACCIDENTALLY shot his sister because she strayed on to some base. But OOOOOOH it's all sinister because it's the GOVERNMENT. Ridiculous.

Usual strong notes of toxic masculinity. I think I’m done with Harlan Coben.

Really enjoyed it. Good suspense. Some cussing.

I really like Harlan Coben's novels! This, like many, is set in New Jersey, with events from years ago a key ingredient. As per usual, this one was a very easy read, and hard to put down. My only (slight) complaint is the ending. I am quite willing to suspend my disbelief, but this time it was just a tad too much. It is quite clever and ties it all together, but for me it came off as too improbable. Still, a strong 4 in rating for the journey there.
