Ooo this was so unexpectedly good! I absolutely loved the premise - the world of Imagination and the Real World - and how it played out was so original and creative! Basically, the world of Imagination has all the characters for every story for the Authors in the Real World. But, the characters have to go to school with majors and minors (protagonists go to Fable and antagonists to Fester). In this story, the focus is on protagonists, the popular ones, and side characters, the less popular (and the cameos are even less so), but the worst fate is to be an "unfinished character". Their mentor/guidance counselors are the "brainstorms". Like I said, SUCH a cool premise.

We get to follow Indira Story as she works to get into Fable, gets into Protagonist Prep, adopts a family (which was ALSO neat, since the FAMILY is also separating auditioning to be part of a story too), makes friends, and uncovers a dark plot/global threat (where are the Editors and Grammar Police?! Haha).

I highly recommend this story and am excited to read the sequel. I also appreciated the author's encouragement in the acknowledgements after the story - the importance of being the protagonist of your own story, while also being the best side character in others stories, while also appreciating the side characters in your own. So good. So true.

What an interesting idea, the thought that the characters in our books had to - basically - audition for them! Some are never chosen, some become protagonists, some become side characters, and some even - horror of horrors - get picked for a story that never gets finished. This is the middle-grade world created by Scott Reintgen, and I found myself quite enjoying it. Indira Story wants to be a protagonist - feels in her bones that she should be one. But she fails her audition, and is told she's struggling in classes. How is she supposed to get that coveted spot in a story just for her?

I quite enjoyed myself with this one - it's fun and interesting and unique, with characters that were also fun and interesting. This would definitely make a great read-aloud for a classroom or at home. No spoilers, but it seemed like there might be more to come? I look forward to seeing how that might happen, and I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys a touch of magic, a touch of adventure & mystery, and a whole lot of heart.

Saving Fable is the story of Indira Story, who is cast as a side-character but longs to be a protagonist. As strange things start happening around her, she gets opportunities to show that she's got the skills to be a protagonist.

I enjoyed the world the author created, and loved all of the literary references. It was clearly written as middle grade, but I still found it entertaining from start to finish, and it's the sort of story that appeals to many ages. I'm hoping to see more of Indira Story's story down the line.

This sweet adventure enriched my day when I read it. Indira Story, the main character, is full of doubt, but she's also full of spunk, and with a few small nudges from friends and mentors, her story is full of courage through all the twists, turns, mishaps, and dangers of the world of Fable.

What a WONDERFUL, FUN book this one is!! I sucked it down so fast!! The story of Indira Story and her chance to be a character in Fable is absolutely delightful!!

Written for young readers, it has a Harry Potter vibe to it. Except what was freakin ingenious was that it is about books being written, characters being chosen to be in them, and it’s a school where the characters study and hope to be chosen by an Author. The world building is so incredible and entertaining! There are bookmarks who are tall, thin, odd characters who walk around talking about the book they’re reading. Then there are DOGears, who run around causing mischief. I mean who wants their book dog eared?!! There is one world, then you look up and there’s another above it!! There are dragon eye transporters to take you up to the other world. Plus the world’s themes keep changing. There’s so much more in this world, it is filled with interesting things!! The characters are so well written, and the plot is adventurous, suspenseful and an exciting ride!!

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone, old and young!! In fact I ordered a hardback copy for a friend’s daughter and i think she’ll love it!!!!

Solidly fun. A bit heavily meta for mid-grade fiction, but it will have its audience. I do enjoy the magic hammer.

Unfortunately I am going to have to mark this one as DNF for now. The story was creative and I certainly didn't dislike it. I think I was overwhelmed with all the details of this little world created by Reintgen.

I'll be happy to try to finish this again at a later date.
