I became increasingly tired of the book as it dragged on. Repetitive and uninteresting. I’m giving it more than 1 star because the narration style was unique and I respect how the author really stuck to his guns on it. However, the story lacked depth. I wish there had been more development of Ox and his connection with the land and the people of Green Creek. Or maybe even something about WTF the boys were up to in their time away. But nope, just chapter after chapter of “tradition” and “running” and “Sunday dinner” like man idgaf.
I rushed thru the last 20% of it because I don’t think the author cared about anything other than making sure his characters found romance. That’s not a problem — it’s just that this book tried to be more and failed. Also, the gratuitous use of italics pissed me off.

it’s beautiful but it could have been 1/3 shorter… not even plot wise tho it does get pretty slow paced, but it’s nice to get to know the broader relationships and community building the romance.
but there’s just so much repetition of motifs that start off as special,
“men don’t cry — i must not have been a man cause i did cry”
“i thought i was dreaming — i must not be cause you can’t feel pain in a dream, and i felt pain”
“my daddy told me people would give me shit”
and even the lovely “candycane and pine cones, epic and awesome” it turns these wonderful contemplative revelations into platitudes 🥲
how many times do these people have to tell him “you’re different” and “i chose you” before it clicks 🙃 and it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine when someone has an insecurity that runs this deep, but they can easily trace it to a single situation of his dad telling him he was dumb. of course it runs deeper, but then i could have done with more examples of his dad’s (verbal) abuse, neglect and undermining rather than constantly going back to this one line that “people are gomna give you shit, but don’t let them get to you” (which.. is not that crazy of advice right? to leave this big of a mark that he is sooo scared to trust people?) idk could be me 🤷🏾♀️
idk i guess i’m not that convinced by love at first sight forever monogamously tied soulmates who were made for each other but also we chose this but also we had no other choice..
other than that it’s deeper than many a romance novel but still falls into the simplistic traps of the genre: “love heals all wounds”
ALSO MR KLUNE. WHY THE F DO THE LOVERS HAVE THEIR MEETCUTE AT 10 AND 16??? couldnt they have been 10 and 12?? 11 and 13?? 12 and 15 tops! but this… the discomfort of reading thru the awkward underage years were so unnecessary!
(and then when they finally nut you hit us with a “it was always supposed to be like this, from the moment we met” ew no please don’t remind me!!!!
