Jane Eyre is arguably one of the most read classic books of all time, and yet somehow I've never read it. Not once. Whoops. I've watched the Crash Course video, but somehow I don't think that counts. This version is an illustrated version from Manga Classics, and yes I know comics and manga are different, but the easiest thing to say is: this is an awesome comic.

Manga Classics have versions of tons of famous books, from Shakespeare to Mark Twain (I absolutely have to get my hands on their version of The Count of Monte Cristo, which is one of my favorite books of all time).

This is a great book for people who want to read more classics, (like myself), but who just can't find the time or energy to wade through all of them. The art style is simple and charming (black and white, as is the case with most manga), and really brings to light the characters. I'm definitely planning on reading more of their work in the future (I already have Sense and Sensibility downloaded, thanks to Netgalley!) and I hope I enjoy it as much as I enjoyed this one!!!

This was my first experience reading a proper manga, so I chose to start with a book I love and it was a great decision.

This manga captures the essence of this story and the drawings were simple, yet spot-on. The one thing that didn't exactly fit was that Rochester was too cute and the book describes him as ugly. However, being in love with him as I am, I loved to see him looking all handsome.

Five stars!

I always find I enjoy adaptations of Jane Eyre more than actual Jane Eyre and this is no exception. Once again, the Manga Classics series does an excellent job of adapting the story while maintaining the integrity of the original language. The art, while making Jane seem too young at times, served well to emphasize the playful and sometimes childish banter between the leads endearing to me a relationship that always bothered me.

Jane Eyre was a book I had heard a lot about. When I read the original book, I found it slow and dragging. The Manga classic was a perfect alternative. Lovely illustrations and the story is narrated so well. Recommended for people who are lazy to read classics like me

Jane Eyre was one of the first classic novels I read and one of my favourites.
So when I heard that there was a manga adaptation about it, I was both excited and nervous about if the adaptation would bring the novel justice.
But I did not have to worry.
The art style (all the characters looked as I had imagined them while reading the story for the first time) and the storyline, which had all the important facts and details in it, made me feel like as if I had read the book all over again.
5 out of 5 stars from me.

That was such a cute and fun way to read a classic with all the exaggerated reactions of a manga.

A re-read (obviously since I have read this around 20 times now) but it still has the power to absorb and move me, and there are still little references and allusions that I pick up now that I hadn't before. A masterpiece - and one I enjoyed reading in the special, suede-bound edition since it forced me to be careful with the book and read more slowly!

I truly wish I had read this novel before I read Wuthering Heights. I found Jane's adventures far more pleasing to read than those of the Emily Brontë's novel.

I found Jane to be a truly loveable character. Despite all of the hardships that come her way, Jane never waivers from her morals and ideals. Like any human - fictional or reality - Jane often questions herself, whether her life is on the right path, and whether or not her decisions are right and just. This is seen exquisitely in her scenes with Mr. Rochester.

Mr. Rochester is a pompous, righteous man who is often humbled by Jane's quick wit and stubborn ideals. This is what drives them so close together, this is the cement of their ever expanding relationship. As a reader, I craved to see their humorous interactions escalate into something more. That is exactly what I got, with a twist.

While this twist threw me greatly for a loop, Jane would not have grown and found more of herself had this not occurred. Jane's plight following the tragic discovery if Mr. Rochester's past is exactly what she needed to find greater independence, and truly discover what it is she wanted in life. In the end, we realize that it will always be Mr. Rochester whom she yearns for.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun, flirty, tragic when necessary, and romantic. We see the growth of a wonderful girl into a strong woman - a woman with advanced feminist ideals slightly ahead of her time. We see a woman stay strong to herself, despite every social convention dictating she should do the exact opposite. Jane Eyre is a lovely story for any person pursuing a Victorian adventure. I would most definitely suggest giving this one a read before Wuthering Heights.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

This was an enjoyable adaptation! The artwork added to the somber story and the multiple tragedies Jane faces. At times, though, it felt like there were jumps in the plot where some of the original was left out. Overall, this a great supplementary book to solidify the original piece of work.

I finally read Jane Eyre and I can't express how much I loved it.

The writing is beautiful and engaging. It never bores me, instead it captivates me. Being written in Jane's PoV you end up amazed by her way of telling things, she never lets things get too fantasy-esque, she tells things the way they were and she describes her feelings and thoughts the way they were, no need for flowery descriptions or too long what-ifs scenarios.

The plot is much much more than a simple love story, it's a story of coming of age almost. It's a biography on Jane, with a love story, or rather two, in it. The first love story is between her and Mr. Rochester, the second is the story of how she ended up loving herself, despite the world trying to take her the other way. But it is not a love story, mind you.

The characters Brontë presents us with are all so different from each other and so layered. Jane is an independent and intelligent young woman who, despite her dark loveless childhood grows up to be a well-mannered, capable of affection and intelligent woman. Jane is an example for women, she never lets society or men decide her fate, HER fate.
Then we have Rochester. What a character. He's not a knight in shining armor, no sir. Rocherster has many many flaws, but he is a good man, a good man that made many mistakes. He's not very likable, he's not attractive and he's a smartass at times. But he's got a mind that challenges Jane. It is through their long interesting conversations that these two fall in love with each other.

There's also St John. A true Christian, so devoted to his mission in life you could say he breathes his religion. I didn't like him, he was a man that demanded that Jane changed herself to the core just to go with him to India.

Jane's life is never easy. She had a loveless childhood in which she was treated in an abusive manner (often physically attacked by Mrs. Reed son and mentally abused my Mrs Reed herself) and fought through hunger, deathly cold and an epidemic (at Brocklehurst's school) that killed her best friend. Even when she goes to Thornfield she doesn't have an easy life. Nor when she leaves Thornfield. But she endures life's challenges, like very few of us would.

To sum it up, Jane Eyre is a fantastic read that will surprise you even if you had watched a movie previously or heard of summaries on it :)
