Trigger warnings: murder, torture, suicide, animal death, alcohol abuse, death of a sibling (in the past), attempted suicide, drug abuse.
3.5 stars.
This...was kind of a weird book. I mean, I liked the mystery and the investigation stuff. The murder was creepy as hell and it kept me guessing. But at the same time, there were so many characters to keep track of and so many segues and so many moments of "..........wait what??" that I din't quite know how I felt about this.
Maybe it was because I didn't realise this was the second book in a series and so I didn't have the background to the characters that I would have had if I'd read the first book? But on the whole, there was just something...lacking...about this for me.

Holger and Mia are back! Mia is still trying to join her dead sister and Holger is still trying to deal with being in love with his ex-wife. Unlike the first book, Mr. Bjork doesn't spend much time flushing out the main characters, or main supporting characters. In that regard, this is definitely not a stand alone book. But the mystery is fully developed and presented in all its disgusting details: a young woman is found emaciated and presented in a ritualistic fashion. It is determined that she was kidnapped and treated like a rat in a cage before being killed. Mr. Bjork leads the reader on a scary, windy, path of intrigue.

Spoiler
One problem I had with the story was how Holger's family once again gets involved with the case. Once is okay, twice is annoying. I was dismayed that Mr. Bjork went there.A copy of this book was provided by Penguin First to Read in exchange for an honest review.

This book is my kinda book. the writing style is very scrambled and all over the place which is why many readers don't like it. i think it is the perfect writing style for a story like this. you have to pick up on tiny details and names and put it all together like one giant, beautiful puzzle. It lost stars because i found the ending a bit rushed and i wished they had explained the psychology of the killer a bit more. i would have liked perhaps even the perspective of a profile. i found one of the new characters Annette, incredibly annoying. i felt she took away from the story rather then added to it. i don't this her character was necessary and i feel like her role could have been allocated to various other characters. i also personally find miriam annoying. i think she is very privileged and she takes it for granted repeatedly and in many different aspects of her life like he loving boyfriend. who she is cheating on and her child who she is leaving with her mother constantly so she can go flirt with her new boy fling. she wants to be a stay at home mom but doesn't actually do it. i think samuel bjork is a very talented author because every character has a very distinct thought pattern in this book. i really do love his writing and look forward to the next books and those to follow.
