This wasn't nearly as well constructed as Gone Girl or Dark Places. I found a lot of the descriptions of injuries overly gruesome, seemingly just for shock value, and the plot itself wasn't really interesting enough to warrant it. The series of plot twists were fairly obvious to me quite early on, and in her later books, I felt extremely clever about the timing in which I figured out what was happening, but here it felt clumsy. The pacing of the reveals also felt incredibly rushed towards the end. Not too disappointing though, since this was her first book, and the others are SO good.

jeeeesus. i was so ready to love this book...what a disappointment. i have never seen another woman write her female characters in the way that male authors do. this book could've been 100 pages shorter if camille would’ve stopped telling me her 13yo sister had big tits. honestly, the sexualization of young girls is so fucking disgusting and unnecessary. what did it add to the book exactly? and the weird glorification of self-harm and mental illness. add .5 a star for the last 20% which was just fucking insane and the only interesting part about this book. save yourself the time--read something else.

book of all time! a perfectly humid, sweaty, nasty summer read.

this book is one of my most re-read books ever, I love it for the atmospheric writing and terrific suspense. I would read Gillian Flynn's grocery lists, she's just so good at building that sense of dread. the twist at the end is ultra-satisfying, even when re-reading.

This is my favorite novel by Gillian Flynn. Even though I love Gone Girl, I think Sharp Objects is more thrilling, unexpected, and gripping (maybe because Camille is a more likable character than Amy but also keep in mind I had watched the TV series before reading Sharp Object but have never seen the Gone Girl film). Also, considering this is the author's debut novel, I think it's spectacular. However, it is a very dark and intense book, so it may not be for everyone.
