I read the original text for this book and it’s definitely one of the more boring Nancy Drew mysteries. Most of the book involves Nancy chasing various people around to little success. Apparently in the revised text a METEOR almost hits the boat? I’ll have to check that out; it sounds hilarious!

2.5

I read Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys throughout my school and college days.

Nancy Drew is an amateur detective who solves crimes with occasional help from her best friends, Bess and George and, her boyfriend Ned. She also has occasional help from her father Carson Drew who runs a private law practice. From finding stolen goods to missing persons and solving mysterious happenings, Nancy is a force of nature.

Until I discovered that Carolyn Keene is a pen name for a whole bunch of ghostwriters, I used to feel confused about the slight differences in each character from books to book over the many series of Nancy Drew mysteries. I like the character of Nancy best in the original books written by Mildred Wirt Benson where Nancy is truly a character to root for – an independent and street smart girl with a penchant for trouble.

This time, we get to know that Nancy can read sign languages. I cannot believe how far-fetched the story was and felt funny when reading about a meteor falling near the ship. I start to question the size of the trunk and the necessity to search the trunk multiple times. Whenever the girls are free or thought of exploring the trunk, they will find pieces of jewellery and call the captain to come and look regardless of the time.

Book Review: Mystery of the Brass-Bound Trunk (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories #17) by Carolyn Keene.

I remember reading this one multiple times, and thinking it was one of my favorites.

Fantastic!

This one was rough. A random meteor shows up in the middle and is never mentioned again? The language was pretty dated and the plot dragged. Not my favorite.

While her father Carson is away on business Nancy, Bess and George join a group of other girls from the Laurel Hall school on a trip to South America.  Of course this doesn’t stop Nancy from sleuthing before she’s even left dry dock as somebody is very determined to prevent her from travelling.

I would have preferred a bit more time spent describing adventures on the ship 🚢 and at ports incorporated into Nancy’s chasing a mysterious red haired man in order to return to him $50!  I know she is a good and honest person which i fully endorse but there is such a thing of taking it bit too far!  I liked the depiction of a young blind girl and her guide dog whom Nancy helps but does show her as being independent, had a job and was adventurous in travelling overseas on her own.  Such representation of a disabled person must have been uncommon at the time.

Note: I reviewed the original text version of this book.
