Excellent collection of 5 gothic stories. I was a bit ho-hum after the first two as they were clever but not really creepy enough but then the next one “Mr Justice Harbottle is definitely a good ghost gets revenge story! And still the book gets better with the fourth “The Room in the Dragon Volant”, a mystery that is solved in such a way as to discount anything supernatural but the fear of being drugged and buried alive is for me at least one of the most frightening ways to go! The vampire story “Carmilla” rounds out the book with a satisfying feel.
I've always loved "Carmilla" and now I find there's more where that came from. Beautiful language and wonderfully creepy :)
Not quite as thrilling as I'd expected. The Room in the Dragon Volant was my favourite story. A quick read if you like old school ghost and mystery tales.

My online book club (Dragons and Jetpacks) did a Secret Santa book exchange this year. My "Santa" was from Ireland and thought I would enjoy this classic Irish author. The book is actually 3 short stories and 2 novellas strung together with the framework narrative of an alternative/supernatural medical doctor. They would all be considered gothic horror stories. The stories all build slowly and have the old, classic style of language (kind of like Oscar Wilde or Charles Dickens). The stories were all okay, but none of them stood out. The most fascinating tale was the last novella Carmilla, which was the vampire story that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula and pretty much every vampire tale thereafter. I enjoyed reading this, but I would not recommend the stories except to individuals who enjoy classic literature.
Wonderful. Ghost stories, fantasy and horror before the genre boundaries and stereotypes were invented. I've previously read Carmilla, included in this collection, and enjoyed most of the others. My favourite was possibly Green Tea - because I love the idea that, to a 19th century Irishman, drinking green tea seemed exotic enough to induce demonic visions.
Perfect for fans of M.R. James and Weird Fiction.
