I could not have picked a better adjective than “interlocking” to describe the way these short stories work. Theoretically, each story could stand on its own, but you would be missing an even richer, greater story that reflects the lives of a group of women who were heavily impacted by a life-changing event that occurred when they were girls. These stories reflect how they approach the world they are in and how they remain connected to one another over the years. In addition to this unique approach to storytelling, I was really taken to Ogunyemi’s poignant reflections on being Nigerian, whether in Nigeria or abroad.
I wasn’t entirely taken to every story, finding some more interesting than others. Unfortunately, the final story was probably one of my least favorites, which is a bit disappointing, since you always want a collection to end on a high note. (I could be in the minority on this front though, who knows.) All-in-all, though, it’s a unique short story collection that’s worth picking up.

Best jacket cover art of the 130+ books I've read this year. I really liked how the stories interlinked organically and how the event from childhood affected each of the women profoundly into adulthood.
Graphic: Racism, Grief, Death, Religious bigotry, and Police brutality
Moderate: Medical content, Bullying, and Violence
Minor: Forced institutionalization and Drug use
