The Good:
  • Funny
  • Excellent artwork
  • Tightens the storyline of the podcast.

The Bad:
  • Story is very much just a DnD campaign, as such the world building can be a bit disjointed, and character actions can seem a little odd.

You Might Like this Book if You Like:
  • The McElroy Brothers
  • Critical Role
  • Dungeons and Dragons
  • Comedy fantasy

I've listened to the Adventure Zone podcast for a bit now, and decided to pick up the comics because a lot of people told me that they enjoyed them more than the podcast. For one thing, the comic book is more accessible to those with hearing impairments, or those that have difficulty paying attention to audio-only mediums.

I found that the comic also smooths out the storyline of the podcast, making it more digestible and easy to follow. Efforts were made to preserve many of the jokes made in the show as well as the feeling of a home DnD campaign. I feel like it succeeds in those regards.

Furthermore, the artwork by Carey Pietsch is lovely and very expressive, which fits with the overall feel of The Adventure Zone. The McElroys and Pietsch paid attention to fans in designing the look of the characters, editing the designs when concerns around diversity were raised. While the final result may still warrant critique, it makes me happy to know they went to efforts to improve.

The comic may not be worth it for everyone that listens to the show, but I think over all, it's a good way to enjoy the story, and it expands access to those that might not have otherwise been able to enjoy the story.
