Having read and enjoyed the comics, this is leaps and bounds beyond them. Well written, with a good premise, The Book of Elsewhere is an interesting novel. I liked the structure, alternating between the present and excerpts from Unute's past.
However, I'm not surprised it's polarizing, especially if you aren't familiar with Mieville. His style can be inaccessible and he doesn't always spell things out. But if you stick it out, you get an interesting story about mortality, identity, and the fundamental forces of the universe. Just don't expect it to always make sense.

An interesting story about immortality...or mortality. Got a little confusing at times with the non-linear-ness of the story. The last hundred or so pages really gave it some life though and it was an enjoyable read.

I retract any ranking of slow I've given to a book before, as this was excruciatingly slow. It was so densely written that it went from a joy to a burden to read. I appreciate what they were trying to do, but it didn't appeal to me as much as I would have liked.

A slow turning intrigue into what it means to be mortal and immortal, done with a weak main thread but with excellent short stories scattered between. A satisfying ending with meaning however.
