When not analyzing too much into it, it is an easy read.

This really reminded me of Alice in Wonderland. Overall, it was nice to go on an adventure with the Lost Boys and visit Neverland, but at times I was a little confused.

The language used to refer to indigenous people is very in keeping with what was acceptable at the time of the book being wrote (in terms of general racism and racial slurs) and so would be deemed as offensive today which may influence some people as to whether or not they want to pick this up.

Peter Pan is the type of book that I imagine children enjoy but do not understand. Because (in the words of a friend) it’s not really a children’s book--it’s a book for adults about childhood and the childhood imagination. Children will no doubt be entertained by the Neverland adventures, but I doubt many of them will really understand their deeper implications. I think Barrie’s assessment of the casual, innocent cruelty of children is accurate, as well as the way children will play-act adult roles like “Father” and “Mother” around other children.

As I read, I thought about whether I would ever try and teach Peter Pan in the classroom. I finally decided on ‘no.’ Not only for the aforementioned reasons, but also because the blatant sexism and racism would have to be addressed and that would take most of the fun out of it.
