I selected this book as a read aloud for my 3rd graders because we study Chicago for the whole year in social studies and we had talked about the Colombian World's Exhibition. I loved the book for giving us some historical fiction to discuss these events over. The biggest problem was that even with me reading the book aloud and stopping to talk about the vocabulary a lot of it was over the 8 & 9 year olds heads that I was reading it to. Thus, they missed a lot of the humor or were confused at times. So now I just need to find social studies material for them. The storyline was a bit dry at times, but then the book wrapped up abruptly and quickly at the end, so that could have been improved. At the end of the day a decent book, not amazing!

Love Richard Peck, love the Columbian Exposition. This book is, unfortunately, not as funny as some of his others, and (in my opinion) doesn't give nearly as much info on the Fair as it could've. I read it aloud to my fifth graders and felt like they didn't walk away with nearly enough knowledge, especially after recently rereading Devil in the White City.

Loved this book. Finally read it when I realized it took place during the Chicago columbian expo. The 1890s was an amazing time in American history. This book is historical fiction, about a simple farm family that is invited by an aunt to visit Chicago and experience the fair, ultimately changing the direction of the children’s lives.
Very well written , entertaining, and educational.

I love this time in history, I love carnivals and fairs, I love Richard Peck, and I love country-people-go-to-town stories. So this one was right up the old alley.

A sweet, nostalgic story about a country girl who gets the opportunity to see the World's Fair in Chicago, 1893. It's exactly what I needed to end my week-long obsession with this fair. It was exactly what I'd hoped for. I don't see this appealing to any of my students, unfortunately. It wouldn't have kept my interest or impressed me at all until just today.

This is one of my favorite Richard Peck books that I've read so far. It's the story of a family from the country who are invited by their aunt to come out the Chicago World's Fair. Peck included some great historical pictures from the fair and used a great balance of history and fiction to make this a great historical fiction story that makes you want to learn more about the period.

Rosie, her sister, brother, and grandfather leave their family farm to head for Chicago to see the World's Fair. They stay with their Aunt Euterpe and experience the thrill of a lifetime at the 1893 World's Fair. A wonderful piece of historical fiction for young readers.
