Dragon Age: Origins was one of the first video games that I ever fell in love with. Up until that point, I hadn't known that a game could contain such an in depth world and fascinating story. Adding together the fact that the game presented a story filled with genuine consequences for choices made by the player, and a cast of incredibly lovable characters, I never looked at a video game the same way again. There have been other games who have come close, but to me this series was the perfect video game and every other game I've played afterward was simply an attempt to capture that awesomeness again.

Recently, I've started replaying the third game in the series, and decided that I wanted a trip backward in time through the characters that I knew and love from the previous installments. I own the old games still, but I'm currently waiting on a controller in the mail, so until then I have to satisfy my craving for more Dragon Age with this omnibus.

In this particular collection, lovable bastard turned king Alistair Theirin is accompanied by hilarious storyteller Varric and beautiful pirate captain Isabela throughout the continent of Thedas in pursuit of his long lost, believed dead, father King Maric. The story is not particularly fantastic, but the artwork is stunning and I was happy to get a fix of my favorite characters. I only wish that more characters from the games had made an appearance.

*Warning that there's slight gore in the comic if you're planning to read it and that's something that bothers you.

One star each for Mae, Alstair, Isabela, and Varric. So 4 stars.

Totally ignoring the fact that Alistair has orange hair, light skin, and bears almost no resemblance to how he looks in the game, the story was pretty good. I enjoyed it.

Alistair seemed a little out of character though, but I'm guessing it's because it's in Bioware's canon and he's king. Which implies that he's hardened so that makes sense. Isabela had some good lines and I liked learning more about her past. I also got whiplash when I saw how buff Varric was and I don't want to see that ever again.

The scene with Alistair and Maric almost made me cry. I wish they would just let Alistair be happy in all the timelines.

This is good! David Gaider always manages to engage me with his Dragon Age writings, and with this omnibus of graphic novels, he does so again. He collects a semi-all-star cast of familiar faces from the video games and sets them on a new adventure that fills in some back story from the very first game while adding in lots of new information. Varric and Isabella were two of my favorite characters from DA 2/3, and while I didn't like Alastair in the first game, he comes off as strong and likable in this adaptation. I think what surprised me most was the layout of the panels, with almost a full two-page spread in every section that really stood out. The art is just right for the Dragon Age aesthetic, which has changed/evolved over time. I think this is a good read even for those unfamiliar with the video game series.
