I read this a few years ago and just noticed it wasn't on my list. I can't remember it well enough to give it a star rating. Also an easy "beach read."

Firefly Beach by Luanne Rice
Have read the other works by the author and love them all. This will be a good read also.
Starts out with the three sisters, coming home to Firefly Beach.
Decades ago his father was killed and the girls witnessed it as young girls. The man stated his wife was off with their father and didn't love him anymore and he wanted to take what their father loved-one of the girls. Caroline wrote to Joe, the son about things around town. She had once mentioned the wreck off the coast that she could see from her house.
Augusta now runs an artist colony and the girls live closeby. The oceanographers want accommodating for the summer, they salvage buried treasures in shipwrecks.
Sky wishes it was her that had been shot and drinks heavily and gets into a car crash. As she heals we learn of things from the past and realize how much the events had on her life.
Love the light keepers daughter diary and how it brings the whole book together along with letter excerpts from Joe and Caroline as younger kids.
Story also follows the other sisters and their lives during the months...liked hearing of the sisters bond with one another but the males have something just as good...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

I had to look and see when this book was published; suffice it to say, it did not age well.

It reads poorly even for a 90s-era book trying to pass itself off as a story someone would actually care about. The characters are either insipid, drunk, or assholes. I find it difficult to believe the manuscript made it past an editor. Not only did the story drag on and on for far longer than necessary, there were GSP issues. More than a few of them. Maybe the author is in the category of writers who are no longer edited, more’s the pity.

There is no chemistry between the main characters. This is tremendously disappointing because of the letters they exchanged through childhood. The sisters’ relationships are just confusing. I do realize people’s reactions to trauma can differ widely, but good lord. It’s just one messed up response after another. Exhausting and ultimately frustrating.

As for the love interest - what love interest? He is a complete jackass, she even says so. You are left wondering whatever is the point. There isn’t enough mystery or unanswered questions to cause a reader to care about whatever reasons he may have for being such a jerk. He just comes off as arrogant and assholey. To blame her for not telling him the complete story about something that happened when she was FIVE - that was horrifically traumatizing for any child - and so many years have passed is just wrong. No one cares about your stupid little anger, buddy. Grow up or go home. Caroline deserves better.

I made it a little over halfway through this book, and gave up because the characters showed no signs of reconciling their differences and their relationship was dead before it even started. There was one kiss, begrudgingly given, and dude, I’m so sorry but if I’m halfway through a book and start to actively despise one of the main characters I’m supposed to be sympathetic towards, you lost me. Just no.

Two stars, begrudgingly given because the plot, set-up, premise, and the letters were really good. The rest was godawful.

"Coolly sophisticated and steadfastly single, Caroline Renwick has always been the sister everyone could count on. As she and Clea and Skye gathered at Firefly Hill, their childhood home, Caroline thought that they had all put the past behind them. But as summer gets under way, a mysterious man arrives—a man who has the power to bring it all back....

Joe Connor was only six when his father died at Firefly Hill. Though he and Caroline had never met, the five-year-old girl reached out to him. They became pen pals and friends, until a teenaged Joe finally learned the truth about what had happened to his father that night. Now, after years of silence, Joe is suddenly here ... and Caroline still feels a connection. But she can't help but wonder if this handsome man holds the key to her family's healing—or its destruction. And in his presence, how long will she be able to guard her heart?" (From Amazon)

A great introduction to Hubbard's Point / Black Hall series...I like Rice's realistic contemporary romance stories. Reminds me of Susan Wiggs.

It's a typical, but good romance novel. Just enough drama to make things exciting.

I really love the way Luanne Rice develops her characters. They are not perfect, but so real. The book starts so sad with a suicide witnessed by two little girls. It starts a life long journey of the two families, and how they each deal with the tragedy. Include the normal crazy, difficult, and always loving relationship of three sisters, some alcoholism, and two brothers trying to connect and how can it be bad? Another day in a typical dysfunctional American family.

I just get swept up in her stories. Can't wait to read the next one!

When I really want to not think overly much I like Luanne Rice because she writes nice stories. Some are more believable than others. This one centers on 3 sisters and I found a lot of the plot points were very contrived but I still enjoyed the romance and drama of it all.

I think the length of time it took me to finish this book is telling! I will admit I read most of it in the last little bit, however it never held me long enough to avoid reading other books. I did want to finish it. I did enjoy it. It just wasn't a page turner.

Could not even push myself to finish this one even though I enjoyed others by her.
