Going with a strong three stars for this one, and for a couple reasons. This book was just okay to me, and not good nor bad.

Nothing Very New :(
To be fair, I went into this book with the hope of maybe some added content or insights. Just like with the Attack of the Clones novel, I went in hoping it’d be like how Matthew Stover wrote the Revenge of the Sith novel, which isn’t fair to Terry Brooks. Maybe even some deep insight thoughts and metaphors to show what the characters are truly thinking. Instead of, “Obi-Wan was angry,” show that anger. What was he thinking? How did he look? Anyways.

Regardless, this book was just the movie slapped on paper. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. It was okay. It was just the movie’s script written into book form, so I think the likability really churns out to if you enjoyed The Phantom Menace in the first place. I thought it was an ok movie, so I think of this book as ok, too.

Anakin & Padmé
To be quick, I thought these two were odd in this book. Nine year old Anakin tells Padmé he’s going to marry her. Padmé, at 14 years old, is giggly about it. Me personally, at fourteen years old, probably wouldn’t have this same reaction. It was.. weird to read how much Anakin adored Padmé in this book. I’d expect this amount of corny in Attack of the Clones to be fair. Nine year old Anakin was smitten with Padmé. Maybe it’s supposed to be intense foreshadowing to her being the reason he goes wild in Revenge of the Sith, but a lot of this could’ve been saved for later when they aren’t nine and fourteen years old.

Anakin & the Tusken
But this was major foreshadowing I ate up and was new. Anakin helps a Tusken and watches it for awhile, making sure it’s okay. The next time he wakes, its buddies have come to get it, and they even leave Anakin unharmed with all the droids he got from the Jawas from Watto. It’s shown that they do have some compassion(?) in a sense, and are sentient enough to offer thanks. Regardless, this all goes south in the next movie because they torture Anakin’s mom for a month and she inevitably dies, leading Anakin to slaughter all of them. He was kind to them now, and the interaction was tense, but it was just major foreshadowing and dramatic irony. Reading it, we all know what Anakin does later on, so it was bittersweet. I ate it up.

in the end
It stands at a strong three stars. I wasn’t impressed, but it wasn’t bad. If it had more moments like with Anakin and the Tusken Raider, it could’ve made its way to four stars, but it’ll sit at three. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of The Phantom Menace anyways, but it wasn’t bad.

Happy 25th birthday, blessed son.

It was a chore to get through. Terry Brooks just went off trying to make his own lore and even contradicted some events of the movie that this book is supposed to be based on.
