I found many of the essays insightful and interesting. The author challenged some of my approaches to feminist critique in a way that I found valuable.
There were some essays that I found weaker than the rest, but I guess that’s often just the nature of a collection.

This author writes well-structured, powerful essays. Her writing will give me a lot to think about.

I enjoyed bits of it but equally some parts just read like an extended book review, whilst others were really fatalistic and depressing

In this book, each chapter was a different essay about topics commonly talked about in the feminist community.
I read this with the Audrey Hope Book Club (Instagram -> @audreyhopebookclub) for January.
I felt that this book was confusing because it had different topics and because I felt like in some she just used other people opinions more than her one or that she really didn’t have one and was just coping with the common opinion.
I didn't have expectations for this book and I’m so happy because this would be disappointing.
The writing was ok but I felt like the author wasn't consistent with the style of essays.

This was an absolutely fantastic series of essays! Jia Tolentino is an incredible writer. She deep-dived into these topics and explored them in a way that was the perfect combination of informative, inquisitive, and humourous. Even with the parts that I didn’t necessarily agree with, she managed to depict her ideas in such a clear and convincing way. I loved reading her ideas and thoughts, and I learnt so much!

This is more of a personal thing — but when it comes to long essays (each essay in this book was about 30 pages long), I like to have a clear idea of what the essay is going to discuss from the beginning (I feel like an English teacher asking for a thesis statement but….. it’s useful sometimes I’m sorry!). She managed to do this flawlessly in the first essay, but not as much in the others, which was okay for some but not as okay for others where I felt like the essay was kind of spiraling and jumping from topic to topic.

My fave essays in this book:
• The I in the Internet
• Always Be Optimizing
• Pure Heroines
• The Story of a Generation in Seven Scams
• The Cult of the Difficult Woman
