It took me two months to read this one so you know getting through it was A Task. Funnily enough, follows the exact same pattern as the first two trilogies (starts off slow and kinda boring, but when it gets good it is very good) despite being a standalone. Definitely not my favourite of the series, it has the same problem of a lot of sequels in that it undoes the heroes’ previous victories in a way that make them retroactively feel rather hollow, and that's always a bummer to see. It's also one of these books that manages to be simultaneously too long (some parts really do drag on) and too short (buuuut it still felt like we were glossing over some key events there).
On the plus side, the second gen kids did grow on me by the end, Tas firmly earns his title of Best Character, and I’m a big fan of the eerie the-sun-will-not-set-and-the-sea-is-now-on-fire apocalypse (seriously tho, the end of the world atmosphere is fantastic).

Set way after the events of the Chronicles and the Legens series, this has some of the old Heroes of the Lance and some of the new generation as they all team up to fight a great evil. Good end of the series, I think. Ties everything together.
I guess the Second Generation is technically book one of this series of two, but I originally read it without that book. No problems. But the Chronicles and the Legends series are a must before this book.
