I picked this up on a whim from my library and finished it within days (I’m normally a slow reader). The author is a New York Times journalist who went around interviewing experts in neuroscience, psychology, etc as well as people who have esteemed careers in fields that require heavy listening skills (ex. former CIA head of interrogation, renowned expert in focus group research, air traffic controllers, etc.) she also cites various peer-reviewed studies and publications.

The result is a fascinating commentary on the effects of the lack of listening on society as a whole, from social media, to politics, to loneliness and mental illness.

I didn’t always agree with everything the author said, the insight was incredibly fascinating. I also found the writing to be easy to follow and difficult to put down.

I don’t anticipate many people living this book, because it challenges the reader to second guess things that are largely normalized by society, and to accept responsibility for some social situations (which is uncommon and unpopular). I wouldn’t be surprised if many would be quick to dismiss the book as rubbish. For those people, I would say that maybe if they tried some of the suggestions (even if they didn’t initially believe they would work, but gave a full faith effort anyway) they might see their mood and quality of life improve. I don’t see much harm in trying.
