Second in the Angel young adult urban fantasy about two half-angel/half-humans and the lengths to which they and their friends will go to rescue the Earth.

My Take
Well, it was boring to start, then it got interesting, and then it got intense---it made me cry. I suspect it might have been better if I'd read the first one first.

There are two separate storylines that eventually merge: Seb is looking for his counterpart while Willow wants to save the world.

It's an exaggerated dive into religious fanaticism, and Weatherly is so cynical...what's scarier is I agree with her! How all these people can ignore the truth around them...I just don't know. I do wish Weatherly had made this part of it more believable. Maybe it's simply part of my own indoctrination about angels that I can't understand how the angels can continue to devour. Or maybe that's part of the exaggeration. If it is, it could use some finessing.

It's an interesting twist on angels and makes me think of Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. Only, Singh's writing is more adult, more polished. Still, Weatherly definitely turns the accepted concept of angels on its head with their maneuvering, plotting, and gameplaying, which makes it more interesting as I have no idea what will happen next. Raziel's thoughts about his daughter certainly aren't angelic.

Nice bit of tension when Willow and Seb meet, although it could have been handled more smoothly. Weatherly does make up for it with even more tension as Seb works with the AKs. More tension with the issues Weatherly creates for half-angels and how they may affect the humans with whom they spend time, the conflicting information about how the Council's deaths may affect the world, Willow's worries about her other half, and the love triangle, perhaps quadrangle?, developing within the group.

Rebellion, bigotry (from several sides), jealousy (I don't understand how someone as intelligent as Alex doesn't get why Willow likes having Seb around!), although Willow should have some consideration as well!

Oh, gross, Raziel is thinking of Angel Camp as a veal farm---full of humans!

The Story
Different from everyone else. Everyone. Seb is desperately searching for the other like him. A girl. A woman who wracks his dreams.

A search that may pay off, as the angels who are worshipped around the world are hunting the woman who dared while Alex and Willow are running.

Too many on Earth have succumbed to the lure of angels, but there's a small group in rebellion.

The Characters
Willow Fields is nephilim: half angel, half human. Aunt Jo took in Willow and Miranda when her mom's mental health worsened.

Alex Kylar is/was CIA and an Angel Killer; he and Willow are in love. Martin was his father; he died of too much exposure, angel burn. Cully, his brother, was also affected by exposure to angels.

Sebastían Carrera is from El DF, the Distrito Federal, Mexico City, and he's so full of it, LOL. A new story for every situation. He's quite clever in surviving and honorable in his way.

Raziel is the angel who leads the Church of Angels in the U.S., and he has his own plans. He's also Willow's father, a fact of which he was unaware until she confronted him. Jenny is one of Raziel's human assistants. Charmeine is another of the lower tier angels, but of the First Family, and she is determined to move up.

Kara is one of the Angel Killers, an AK. Sam, a.k.a., Tex; Liz, who loves to cook; Brendan; Trish; and, Wesley, the loner computer geek, were angel spotters. Until they graduated to AKs. Now if only they had some decent training. Luis is a guard at the Catedral Metropolitana. Sophie Kinney is CIA, part of the covert Project Angel. Juan Escobido is dead.

Nate and Elijah were renegade angels who broke from the rest to help humanity.

Lucy, Amanda, Céline, and Mike, are part of a group of American students fascinated by the angels whom Seb meets at the hostel.

The Seraphic Council, the Twelve, are the top tier of angels, the most powerful, the ones with the original angel energy. Isda is often their spokeswoman. Next level down are the First Family, angels formed soon after the Twelve. The angel Paschar foresees that Willow will destroy the angels.

The Crusaders are an anti-angel group.

The Cover
The cover has a softness to it, ethereal with the woman leaning so far forward in her white gown with its wrapped bodice crisscrossing over one breast that she appears to be running, even though it feels more like she's floating. The stylized outline of flames surround the title, Angel Fire, for she seems an angel and it burns.

Angel Burn is about a girl named Willow. In the last book Willow found out she was half Angel, that Angels feed from peoples' energies and that Angel killers want to stop then. She tried to help the Angel Killers destroy the Church of Angels before the Second wave. The problem is that people worship the Angels forever after they have been fed from and can't see them. THe news is broadcasting her as a terrorist who hates Angels and is possibly insane. So she changes her hair, takes her Angel Killer boyfriend Alex, and heads to Mexico. When they get there, Willow has a Vision, it shows twelve brightly glowing Angels and a boy she has never seen before, but feels very close to, in Mexico City. Alex agrees to go there and when they finally arrive they find a group of Angel Killers who are not very good. They help the AKs fend off the Angels and then ask them lots of questions. It turns out they were Angel spotters in the US, but found another Angel Killer and came here. After being reunited with Kara, the other AK, Alex agrees to train them. One day when they are out on a hunt Willow meets Seb, the boy from her dream. He had been trying to find them because he was also a half Angel. Seb teaches Willow many things she doesn't know how to do with her Angel powers. Unfortunately, Seb and Alex do not get along very well. Previously they had learned that the Twelve Angels were the ones who governed the other Angels. If they destroyed The Twelve they could destroy all the Angels. At the last minute before the attack Willow learns that her father Angel, Raziel, has been looking through her mind and knows the plan and that it might not destroy all the Angels, but quite a few and he plans to take over afterwards. Willow tries to give this information to Alex and he starts to listen, but Kara comes in and overthrows Alex, Willow and Seb. She takes the rest of the group and continues with the original plan. They finally work their way out of the basement they were locked in and hurry to stop them. When they get there they are almost too late. Most of the Twelve are gone, they try to stop them, but soon they are all dead. As Raziel predicted, half the angels in the world die but most are alive. The group runs away and flies off the roof. The Twelve had put roots in Mexico City as well as many other cities around the world and as they died the roots started destroying the cities. They barely make it out. When hey leave Willow is still afraid she causes Angel burn to Alex, so stays away from him even though he wants to make up from the previous fight and breakup. His aura is damaged like and Angel Burn Victim's. Alex remembers that his dad had them too and insists its an AK thing. Seb reads Alex's future and decides that this is true. Willow has her boyfriend Alex and her best friend Seb back. They plan to go to Nevada to set up a base and continue to fight the Angel's.
I liked this book because I found it easy to follow even though I had not read the first. I look forward to a sequel, but will probably not read The first book. It sounds fun but i think I got the information I needed from this book.

Alex & Willow | Assassin/Victim Romance | M / F | Book 2

Absolutely loved this book! Healed my inner child as I read the first one when I was like 14 but I couldn’t be asked to wait 2 years for the next one to come so I just forgot about it! Loved finding it now!!

Had everything I love (jealousy, will they won’t they, a tiny bit of action, camp setting).

Was rooting for Seb for like the first 85% of the book and then when willow broke Alex’s heart - I became team Alex!!

Truly loved it! Happy girl.

I was unsure about starting in on this next installment in the Angel Burn series. The first book was more enjoyable than I had originally anticipated, as can be seen in my review. But something was keeping me from getting excited about this next book. Perhaps it was the over-exposure to angel paranormals. Regardless of the reason, when I finally picked it up, the story performed better than I expected.

The action in chapter one picks up right where the first book leaves off, which is always appreciated by me. There's no better way to start a sequel than with action directly after the first book. no lazy daisy taking your time getting back into the story! In fact, the action was better overall in this book than in the first. Action can go such a long way in the reader's pleasure! I liked that there was so much fighting and gun-shooting action. I still love the way angels are evil in this series.

The characters were just so-so. Willow was fine, with her complex relationship with her two selves. I honestly wanted to see more of her struggle, instead of her just pushing her angel side down. Alex was a bore, being way too over-dramatic one moment, and then being for too submissive in the next. The introduction of Seb was a saving point, as the conflict he brought to both Alex and Willow was intense. I would have to agree with Willow that the choice is tricky.

There is supposed to be on more book to round out this trilogy, and though I hesitate to get excited about it, I know I will pick it up to see the fate of these characters.

This book is so emotional. It is so frustrating, to the point of wanting to throw it out the window. For that reason I rated it 4 stars, also because I didn't find it to be as happy and compelling as the first one. I was annoyed a lot and it made me anxious. This didn't make it any less good, the writing and storytelling was still really great, I just didn't love it as much.

I understand why Weatherly threw in the love triangle. It needed that new emotional turmoil, I could hardly expect Alex and Willow to carry on normally. They had all this stuff happening living in Mexico City with the AK's, and it made sense that someone like Willow would be discovered. How could there not be a love triangle? I think it was natural too for Willow to sort of like Seb even though she loved Alex. She has finally found someone who understands her, who can be her best friend and empathize with her, plus he's super attractive. I just really hated that Alex had to be such a jerk about it- I understand jealousy but god. The way he treated Willow about it leading up to their fight and everything was so unacceptable.

Thankfully all was eventually well and he came to his dang senses, but I'm really annoyed with the synopsis of the third book that hasn't even come out yet. It says there's still going to be a love triangle. Like, what? I thought we obviously got passed that. I sincerely hope Weatherly does the right thing here and doesn't play our emotions too hard, because after Angel Fire I think we all may be rather drained.

For a second novel it still will keep the reader very interested, I could barely part with this 600+ page novel. It definitely held it's own up to the impressive first first book, and I'm very interested and hopeful for the third in last in this trilogy.
