This is a collection of traditional hymns with the story behind some of them written next to them. There are also illustrations to accompany them. I found the stories of the hymns to be written in rather dated language, but considering this was written in 1946, that can be forgiven. Some were also a bit simplified, especially a story about Martin Luther. I listened to most of the hymns on YouTube and that enhanced the experience more than just reading the words to the hymns. I also liked the illustrations.

This is a truly lovely book. The illustrations are nice, and accompany the hymns well, though the artwork is not stellar. I really appreciated the background of these hymns, though they were watered-down or prettied-up a bit. The collection is pretty England-based; my guess would be an Anglican or Methodist background to the author.
