This book was definitely worth the unexpected wait, and a satisfying end to the trilogy. The characters and sense of place are so strong; you feel like you're in the midst of battles and army camps with Isabel, Curzon, and Ruth the entire time. There are plenty of twists to the plot to keep you on your toes, while the ending brings everything full circle. Highly recommend this series.
Well worth the wait! Like the old days of waiting for a new Harry Potter book, I spent the past weeks rereading Chains and discovering Forge. Then, Ashes did not disappoint with its twists and turns, and the strong characters we've come to know and love. Some book series tapir in strength or quality, but Ashes holds its own and satisfyingly completes a marvelously written tale of loyalty, friendship, and freedom.

This was an incredible finale to the Seeds of America trilogy! Anderson did so well at bringing all of the different pieces from the series to a well-developed close in this story, and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment of this book. She created incredible character relationships and dynamics in this series that developed so beautifully and came to perfect fruition in this final installment.

Nice finish to a great young reader's historical fiction series. I thought it was a great way to finish Isabel's, Curzon & Ruth's stories and covered the history well without getting too bogged down in details for a children's story. I have said before, it takes incredible skill to write children's or young adult historical fiction without "writing down" to the young people, and I think the author did a nice job with balancing that here. I did think that there were some details that didn't really add up perfectly, hence 4 stars instead of 5. Nice series.

In the final installment of Anderson's Seeds of America trilogy Isabel and Curzon are finally at the end of one leg of their journey. They have arrived in South Carolina to see if Ruth really has been living in one of the Lockton's homes since she was taken away from Isabel years before. Anderson wastes no time having them find Ruth right away, but there is a twist. She's angry at Isabel, and wants nothing to do with her. Isabel will not be deterred, and she Curzon, Ruth, and Ruth's friend Aberdeen begin the long journey to Rhode Island. Still their path is filled with treachery as they find themselves involved in the Battle of Yorktown. Anderson ends this trilogy nicely with just enough plot resolution to be believable. Again she brings up both sides of the story when it comes to slavery in America during the Civil War. The chapters are short, and it's a quick read. An appendix at the end details much of the history she references and includes additional readings. Readers of this series will not be disappointed, and those new to the series will want to start at the beginning.
