The book is split into three sections. The first is an overview of how UK publishing works, from landing an agent to the book sitting on the shelves, including a discussion of numbers, which is absolutely fascinating and a must read for anybody interested in being an author. He also gives a good account of the different models of publishing, and the pro and the cons of each.

The second is some general writing advice and common errors to avoid. There are no great revelations here, but it's comprehensive enough and I like Pack's style of delivery. If you've ever completed a full first draft, you've probably figured most of it out yourself.

The third is advice for how to put together a submission package for  - again, there's nothing revelatory, it's the same basic advice you'll find pretty much anywhere (because the idea of what goes in a submission package is easy, the execution is hard).

It's definitely worth reading, but - for me - it's not going to be something I ever consult again. Library or KindleUnlimit it.

Witty and informative. This 'how-to' for writers covers all the bases without indulging in self-importance the way most books about the craft of writing do. His insights into the publishing industry are generous and much appreciated. Reading this is like having a chat over a cup of coffee with someone who is really rooting for you.
