I enjoyed the writing style a lot. The visual symbolism throughout was easy to paint a picture, and the way the words flowed was satisfying. But the actual message felt pretentious, considering the only two prominent women in this are a manic pixie dream girl (a teenager at that) and a ditzy housewife? No thanks.

How do you get so empty? He wondered. Who takes it out of you?

Guy Montag is a fireman, but in his world, firemen start fires rather than extinguish them. His job is to rid the world of the last vestiges of literature by burning the houses of people found to possess the contraband items. His wife, Mildred (Millie), is obsessed with TV programmes & listening to never-ending noise on her earbuds, but doesn't want to question why this makes her unhappy. Montag also doesn't question what he does or how they live until he meets, Clarisse (early Manic Pixie Dream Girl alert!!), a young teenage neighbour who talks about things that Montag never really thought about before. When Clarisse disappears, Montag spirals into behaviour that will ultimately threaten his marriage, his job, & even his life.

Finally got around to reading this one folks, & it's...OK. I wasn't blown away by it as I found the characters all a bit hard to like or empathise with. The female characters especially are very thinly drawn, with Clarisse & Millie nowhere near being fully fleshed characters who the reader can care about. There's quite a bit of casual cruelty (treatment of animals, & the car full of young people who try to run Montag over just for fun), especially the killing of an innocent man just for ratings. To me, the author is trying to say a lot about censorship, apathy, & the dumbing down of standards, but it gets lost in the overly florid writing style. 2.5 stars (rounded up to 3 on sites which don't allow half star ratings).

Habt ihr euch in der Schule jemals mit Bücherverbrennungen beschäftigt? Wir schon und mir war immer zum Heulen zumute, wenn ich darüber lesen musste oder wir sogar Videos angesehen haben. Bradbury ging es dabei wohl ebenfalls nicht besonders gut, anders kann ich mir dieses Buch nicht erklären. In dieser Zukunftsversion, die er hier beschreibt, sind Bücher streng verboten. Die Menschen in dieser Zukunft dürfen Musik und Radio hören, fernsehen, mit schnellen Autos fahren und auch das sich gegenseitig Umbringen ist durchaus akzeptiert, aber Bücher sind verboten. Die bringen Menschen nämlich dazu, sich und ihr Leben zu hinterfragen und macht sie so unglücklich. Gut, dass es die Feuerwehr gibt, die "happiness boys", wie sie sich selbst nennen. Du siehst, dass dein:e Nachbar:in Bücher hat? Schnell die Feuerwehr anrufen, dann wird diese Person eingewiesen und ihr gesamtes Hab und Gut wird verbrannt. Die Hauptfigur dieses Buches ist Montag, ein Feuerwehrmann, der seinen Job liebt. Zumindest, bis im Haus nebenan die junge Clarissa einzieht. Sie könnte seine Tochter sein und im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Protagonisten in Klassikern behandelt er sie auch dementsprechend und nicht wie eine potentielle Partnerin. Halleluja! Clarissa passt nicht so recht in diese Welt. Sie will tiefe Gespräche führen, spazieren gehen, den Regen auf der Haut spüren und stellt unangenehme Fragen. Und damit bringt sie Montag zum Nachdenken? Was genau verbrennt er da eigentlich? Und warum?
Diese Dystopie spielt sogar von unserer Gegenwart aus gesehen in der Zukunft. Es werden die 2020er-Jahre erwähnt, doch auch die liegen hier schon weit in der Vergangenheit. Dort gab es die ersten Atomkriege und das machte mich dann doch eher nervös. Wir sind gerade mitten in den 2020er-Jahren und ein Atomkrieg scheint für mich jetzt nicht so eine unwahrscheinliche Option zu sein. Das war gruselig.
"Fahrenheit 451" ist ziemlich schnell auf meine Favoritenliste gelandet. Es hat mir einfach unglaublich viel Spaß gemacht, Montag auf seinem Weg durch die verkorkste Zukunft zu begleiten und mir zu überlegen, wie zur Hölle ich meine Bücher verstecken würde, wenn ich in dieser Welt festsitzen würde. Und nein, ich habe noch keine Lösung gefunden.
Mein Fazit? Extrem spannend und obwohl es sich um einen Klassiker handelt, leicht zu lesen. Ich kann es euch nur empfehlen.
