Parts were good, other parts not so much. It seems it's the 2nd in a series, but it's not necessary to read the first.

This is one story I wished I had stopped reading. There was a lot of confusing and somewhat misleading information. The dialogue felt over-the-top at times and the romance/love between Julian and Deb didn't feel real. I don't think I will read anything else in this series.

Do you like relationships that start from a very bad beginning? Then do I have the book for you! You are about to enter a world of ridiculousness.
Julian and Deb are forced into a marriage in the middle of the night. She's 12 and drugged up on laudanum so she has no memory of this night. He's 16 and drunk, but remembers it quite well. They are married, and then he is whisked away on a Grand Tour. Years pass, and then a meet-cute happens in the woods. He's been stabbed in a duel; she is secretly playing music with her nephew. Sparks fly as she bandages him up. Unbeknownst to them both, it's their spouse! He finds out, she doesn't, and he marries her all over again. And this is actually where the story gets rolling. All of this nonsense happens in the first chapters.
You see, this whole book is ridiculous. If you think I'm making this all up, go get yourself a copy and discover just how crazy this whole plot gets. Despite all of the insanity, I'm actually going to give this book 2.5 stars. Not sure that I'll read the others, but maybe. Sometimes I'm just like that.

I really didn’t like Julian’s character throughout this book, he was constantly flipping between characterisations, and Deborah was just sort of there.
The characters were rather boring and I really don’t like the book’s trope:I’m already not a fan of arranged marriages, but I can see their appeal if they’re written well. Unfortunately, this book treated quite blandly the trope and made it worse. Somehow.
The characters were rather boring and I really don’t like the book’s trope:
Graphic: Gaslighting
Moderate: Misogyny
Minor: Infidelity

The Roxton series is very much in the vein of what brought me to the genre a long time ago. Very dramatic, and maybe more so than necessary. This works so well for me that I have pushed back other AE books to continue reading this series.
The narration is part of why I like the books, I am sure.
I do worry a bit about a series that stretches over generations, as this means that heroes and heroines actually die. But maybe, with this author...
It is all so ... romantic.

Nothing new or groundbreaking, just good old fluffy comfy read, exactly what I needed. I'm sure I'll read more in the series in the future when I need them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Roxton saga, and the narration by Alex Wyndham was excellent as always.
