After reading this I realised that I love Clarice Lispector more in her novels than in her short stories. There were a lot of strong ones in this collection, but there’s this feeling that I wish I didn’t read them continuously. However, it’s a worth it read and I know I will keep coming back to some stories here.
I think Clarice’s body of work is HEAVILY improved by context. Reading the introduction made the experience for me, apart from the actual experience that is; because I do think her writing is so clever and puts a finger on the mystical part of living that is the internal.
”Tenha cuidado com a Clarice”, disse um amigo seu, décadas atrás, a uma leitora. “Não é literatura. É bruxaria.”
impossible to rate. so worthwhile to read slowly and carefully, read aloud even. need to read again.

Lispector's stories have a rich sort of joie de vivre that made them really pleasant to marinate in over five months. I think I didn't understand half to 2/3 of the stories in here, but in a pleasant way that made me more intrigued about trying to figure them out. Of the stories I feel like I "got," I thought they sort of delved into the emotional center of existing as a person in a way that was oddly logical and interested in defining feelings. The stories that deal with adolescents beginning to grow up seemed particularly approachable in regard to the way Lispector describes feelings about your place in the world. And the feelings described feel at once specific and universal that was really special. I will probably try to read Lispector's whole ouerve.
Grammatically, the translators tried to maintain the odd way Lispector phrases things, and I have never read anything quite like it. I can't quite say I understand why she phrases things the way she does. This made the stories have a sort of casino quality to them, which sort of made me feel the way I did reading literature that was out of my depth in college. It was great to obsess about these stories for a few months.

Lispector really is something else. Her writing is surprising, honest, raw and often very unusual. While some stories went above my head, I’m convinced that I need to read everything she’s published.
