I read this for school, but I was surprised at how beautifully written it was, and how effective the irony is. It's impressive how Greek plays stand the test of time.

All I have to say is that calling it an "oedipus complex" is really unfair. The man clearly did not do this on purpose

I read this for class and it was actually quite enjoyable. Even though it is a very odd story I still felt like it was a great read!
I re-read this story and it was still good as the first time I read when I was a kid :)
So in class we were told that the importance of Oedipus falls into the fact that the element of tragedy in this play actually inspired many great playwrights. Since we will be doing Hamlet, apparently Oedipus is a great way to start.
I mean, I’m trying not to be grossed out right now. And Greek heroes/heroines are notorious for finding the most ridiculous of ways to avoid a prophecy yet somehow becoming surprised when it happens to them anyway.
Most of play is just a conversation between Oedipus and many people and him finding out the truth. And despite the entire truth coming to light it does him no good and in the end he does wish that he’d never lived. Although he is somewhat dull in the fact that he can’t seem to put pieces of a puzzle together yet somehow solve the riddle of the Sphinx?
I guess the tragedy in this play is that it is inevitable. There isn’t really much else to talk about. There are themes of fate, justice, truth and happiness that lead to the apparent “madness” and chaos of this family.
Personally I wouldn’t recommend reading this for fun unless you are interested in the themes that are mentioned in the end. The essays discussed were definitely more fun to read than the actual play. Interesting if you can get past the what-the-effery.
