The way I love this series... Just... Mind-blowing!

Not only does it have the perfect amount of surprises and things I was rambling on about a couple of pages before. Which I find very satisfying as a a reader and so rewarding!! I love the combination! But also, second book of the series and second book where there was a particular life where... Well, I'm a simple girl, give me Russiaverse or mobverse and I'm happy with the angst fallout.

Returning to the book itself! Yes, I seem to do this with this series, but continuing...

Amazing book! Multiverse seems beautifully woven! The different dimensions were amazing and to be able to see the impact of the choices done in other dimensions, it was brilliant!

What shapes our lives? Destiny, coincidence or choice?

I liked this better than the first book, but quite often I didn't like the actions of the main character. And does every series book have to end in a cliffhanger now?

A lot of fun but not very deep though 2 and 3 do try more. If you like sci-fi/fantasy with young romance and a lot of manufactured challenges thrown in then you'll love this one. A great lighter read after something really tough and dark!

Critically
Plot – 4.5 out of 5 stars
Again, the story in this book is slow in the beginning. It includes a lot of catching up with what happened after the events of the first book. It’s action packed and full of conspiracy theories. It deals with death, love and ethics and personal morals. The ending is incredibly heart wrenching but I loved how beautiful and intricate the different dimensions are.

Writing Style – 4 out of 5 stars
The writing style in this series is great. It’s visually rich with its descriptions and details, it’s so easy to imagine all the different settings. It’s intense, engaging and really emotional. The author has a really big imagination and she’s really creative to come up with all these different scenarios that work scientifically yet work with a normal reader to be easily understandable.

Characters – 4.5 out of 5 stars
The relationships between the cast of characters is definitely getting much more intense and much more complicated.
Marguerite is awesome. I’ve really loved seeing her development in these books. She’s determined and headstrong, she has a single minded focus to get things right. In this book in particular, she’s really emotional and vulnerable. So many different things change in this book and she tries her best to deal with them.
The rest of the cast goes through so much as individuals as well as together. This book in particular is really tough on everyone. Each character has so much growth and development and it was enjoyable to read.

Emotionally
SpoilerI think this series is going to be on my favorites list because I really really enjoyed going on this interesting and complex dimensions journey with these characters.

This second book blew the first one out of the water! It had a lot more action, more dimensions and more surprises.

The plot is full of non-stop action. We follow Marguerite who has to travel between dimensions again on a mission to collect the pieces of Paul’s splintered soul as well as maybe find a cure for the affects of Nighthief on Theo’s body. The beginning in this book was slow, in a way to help the reader catch up with what happened between the end of the first book and this second one. But the action happens right after that and doesn’t let up throughout the entire book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and completely engaged the entire time I was reading. The plot in this book in particular is really intense and emotional, a lot of things could go wrong and every change and twist was agonizing and powerful. We get to travel to a lot more dimensions in this book and I love what that ignited in the development of the characters. There’s something to be said about confronting what path your life might have taken because of different decisions by your parents and by your own and how that changes you as a person. The characters really have to confront the similarities and differences between their alternate selves and who they are whether it’s good or bad. I really enjoyed that part of the book. And it’s also interesting to see how the relationships between people may change with each dimension. The author played a lot with how the same people tend to show up around you, no matter which dimension you’re in, but also with shifting how they relate to you depending on the kind of life you live. It’s such an intriguing concept. This book in particular had so many surprises and twists and turns, specially in the last half of the book that really build up to a huge revelation and game changer at the end that really expands and intensifies what the next book will be about.

Marguerite is on a kind of emotional roller coaster in this book. She’s up and down all the time and really warring with herself about various different things. She feels she’s doing the right thing for the people she loves but she also has to do some things that she considers wrong to make sure her loved ones are safe. It causes a lot of internal struggles for her, decided between what’s more important: her ethics and morals or love and keeping people safe. It made for some interesting development in her character that I enjoyed reading. She’s still determined to come out on top and I love her attitude.

The side characters also have a lot of development, we get to see more in depth into their personalities in this book which I really enjoyed. Paul is a little bit absent in the sense that the original dimension version of his character is rarely on the page, instead we get to see a lot of different versions of him in their own form. That was a really intense and emotional process, not only for the characters but also for the readers. I kind of want the original back though. Theo is someone that I felt I didn’t get to know as well in the first book for a certain reason so it was nice to get to know his character and personality in this book. He’s really selfless while still being really flirty and funny. He’s scared a lot in this book but that just makes him much more real and honest.

Overall, I’m a huge fan of this series. I read the first two books as buddy reads and it made the whole experience that much richer. The different plots have such a great combination between science and contemporary elements, they’re action packed and entertaining. I fell in love with the cast of characters and I feel like they all grow throughout all three books. I wish there was more to read from all these crazy different worlds and I can’t wait to see what else the author has in store.

As much as I adored this book, and believe me, I did. I felt like it was ruined by the love triangle. Claudia did a wonderful job on the story, the perfect characters, the universes, but the love triangle is something I can't get by in this book.

At points it seemed the love triangle took over more than it should've.

In this story, Marguerite is left to find the four pieces of Paul's soul that have been scattered throughout the different universes. Under Triad's control, Marguerite has to find his splintered soul and piece him back together, all while sabotaging the work of the firebird by the alternate universes. Marguerite is left wondering who it is that she can trust and if dimensional travel is really worth it.

What I liked:

The characters were still the powerful characters I cared about in the first book. Theo was beautifully written as the quirky best friend that's also a genius. Paul was the lovable boyfriend that I want in real life, and Marguerite was the cool female lead that I'd been waiting for.

The new universes they traveled to where all well built in terms of worldbuilding. Claudia Gray has a way of imagining many different possibilities with different issues that would only make sense in that world. The beauty of Cambridge, the old-fashioned dresses of the 1800s, and the intriguing war in San Francisco.

The way Claudia Gray writes is what always draws me to her books. I like the way she gives vivid imagery of scenery, but I want a little more about the characters. It's always me complaining about that, but I'm not sure what Margeurite herself looks like other than curly hair.

What I didn't like:

The love triangle. If I'm going like a love triangle, I have to be able to see the good in both relationships. If I like one boy and not the other, than it just becomes tedious, or in this case, she's already bound to someone, not the other. There shouldn't be a love triangle.

It's not a crime to have a guy best friend that is a.) not gay, and b.) not in love with you. More often than not, best friends do not get together. It can happen, but it usually doesn't.

Complaints aside, I loved the book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good sci-fi novel and doesn't mind unnecessary love triangles. Sometimes there hard to push through.
