It's hard to follow up a masterpiece such as Ninth House, and I get the feeling that Hell Bent might have been difficult to read. I found the pace a bit lacking at the start, but it does catch up towards the end of the book, and I preferred the second half overall.

Even though it didn't quite captivate me in the same way Ninth House had (and I had just reread it), I did thoroughly enjoy Hell Bent, and was delighted to get all the characters back. There are some great ideas in there, and I like the way the universe gets expanded, although I felt this same expansion could have been explored a bit more. As I already mentioned, I especially enjoyed the last part, and am looking forward to seeing where it'll go from there.

Amazing, powerful, fantastic, everything I love about the magic of fiction! This second installment in the series was even darker than Ninth House, which is saying something. The stakes were SO high throughout, and I was constantly wondering how Alex was going to get herself out of this one. It made it quite a page turner. With new adventures, new monsters, and a deeper dive into characters we’ve already been introduced to, this checks all the boxes for a good sequel. There’s a specific location at Yale that plays a huge role in this book, and it absolutely fascinated me. Yale and New Haven are already so delightfully spooky, even without the added fictional magical elements! I REALLY want to visit.

Do I give books too often 5 Stars?? Maybe. But this one deserves it. It was awesome, just amazing, emotional, dark, scary and the characters are so interesting and you care for them. ALSO FINALLY. ykiyk.
I need a next book DESPERATELY.
