I went into this with slightly different expectations than what the book actually is, which is entirely on me for taking a TikTok recommendation and not reading a blurb. I did enjoy the lovely and obviously deeply researched depictions of class dynamics, social norms and living conditions in Jaipur post-colonialism. However, I found the characters and plot to be a bit predictable and weak. I felt like I could guess every plot point coming about 10 pages sooner than it was revealed on page (or over the audio, in my case), and it drove me a bit crazy.

4.5 stars.
This was a phenomenal book. I loved the inside on how india operated and the families. This was a beautiful book about hardship , love , guilt, and starting over. I love Lakshmi and respect the hardship she had to endure throughout this book.

I liked reading the henna artist. It was a unique perspective which made the story engaging and interesting. The characters were interesting and complex.

Atmospheric story that is told through moving and matter of fact prose. Follows an Lakshmi, a woman who has given up more than just her current life to build her dream home, but her past confronts her on a terrifying but eye opening adventure. She learns who and what truly matters. Set in 1940s India.
