An excellent continuation of the story, world building and characters whose relationships are constantly developing against the backdrop of the imminent war. I think my favourite are the Mantis kinden, I love the way they fight and their characters are fascinating.
This book focuses on the take over of the other kinden and their countries by the wasps. I found this to be interesting as there were many different tactics used by all sides and by the characters in the previous book and also new ones too. It also brings up some moral questions about war and it’s consequences.
On the whole a satisfying story which kept me entertained right up to the end. Jam packed full of action, sieges and battles. I’m Looking forward to the next..

Not sure the pace is slow per se, but the way the plot jumps means it never really seems to pick up pace. Quite enjoying the overall plot, so suspect I'll continue to work through the series, but not with enthusiasm.

I’m convinced, this book takes place in our far future where man has been shrunk to the size of insects, but to help us survive such a thing, we have been given “art” - I’m probably a beetle, and definitely “apt”!
If this all doesn’t make sense to you, do yourself a favor and pick up the first book, you’ll have trouble putting it down.

So much fun - well-done war story in a creative fantasy-steam-punk setting.

Very propulsive read, filled with more war action than the first, and gives us a closer look at the Ant-kinden and their societal ways of doing things, which was intriguing. Reading through ebook was the right decision, as I didn't much like the narrator for the series.
All the mentions of the huge wasps that act as 'air cavalry', and the draft beetles for pulling carts makes me want a slice of life short story about animal husbandry in this world.
Character wise, Totho's storyline has gotten much more complex, and makes me want to see where his path takes him. Personally, he still feels distasteful though, especially when he digs up his entitlement toward Che. Grief in Chains doesn't have much a role in this book, but gives me some deja-vu about her character archetype, as Ive seen it before in Cage of Souls and to a lesser extent, Bear and the Serpent. What is with the ethereal lady that just seems to attract men to atrocities? Wish there was a perspective chapter from her instead of the men after her.
Really loving the glimpses of the Spider-kinden in this book, and hoping to see more of them and their society in later installments.

On a re-read, this is easily a 5 star read! I do not think I caught a few remarkable things the first time around. It is a story about second chances (and there are at least three who get these second chances here). Loved the theme around choices. Top notch.

Review to come; I struggle to avoid gushing right now. The main features are the story (so much happening, so many different story lines balanced beautifully) and the characters. Their development is just uncanny; their morality is dubious in many cases and it makes it for an incredible journey.
